Etymology

Inherited from Old Church Slavonic пещи (pešti), from Proto-Slavic *peťi. Cognate with Russian печь (pečʹ), Latin coquō (whence English cook), Ancient Greek πέσσω (péssō), and Sanskrit पचति (pacati).
