Etymology 1[edit]

From Proto-Uralic *pälä (half; side).[1] Cognates include Northern Sami bealli, Finnish puoli, Eastern Mari пел (pel), Udmurt пал (pal), Northern Mansi па̄л (pāl), Hungarian fél.[2]

Either from Proto-Uralic *päle (post) (whence also Finnish pieli, Hungarian félfa),[3] or from Proto-Uralic *pelɜ- (to pierce) (whence also Moksha пялемс (päľems, to pierce), Erzya пелемс (peľems, id.))[4]
