From Persian چای(čây), Sanskrit चाय (cāya), from Sinitic (MC ɖˠa, “tea”).

Cognate with Southern Altai, Kyrgyz, Karakalpak чай (çay), Kazakh шай (şay), Karachay-Balkar шай, Tatar чәй (çäy), Uzbek choy, Uyghur چاي(chay), Azerbaijani, Crimean Tatar, Turkish, Turkmen çay (tea), etc.
