Inherited from Old East Slavic ѫжь (ǫžĭ), from Proto-Slavic *ǫžь, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂éngʷʰis (snake). Cognates include Latin anguis, Old Prussian angis, Lithuanian angis, Latvian odze, Old High German unc and Old Armenian աւձ (awj).
