From Proto-Mordvinic *šumbra, ultimately from the root *šumər of Turkic origin; compare Kazakh шымыр (şymyr, sturdy; dense). Erzya чуморкс (čumorks, healthy) and чумордамс (čumordams, to finish, complete) derive from the same Turkic root.
