Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Mordvinic *šuvtə, from Proto-Finno-Permic *šukta (tree species). Cognate with Erzya чувто (čuvto), Finnish huhta and Estonian uht. The Finno-Volgaic word was probably borrowed from Proto-Iranian [Term?]; compare Persian سوختن (sôxtan, to burn).
