From *iš-lä- (to do; make, produce; work), from Proto-Turkic *īĺč (work, act, deed).

Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (išlä-, to do, make);[1] Kazakh істеу (ısteu), Kumyk ишлемек (işlemek), Uzbek ishlamoq, Turkmen işlemek, Turkish işlemek, etc.
