Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Perixanjan derives from North-Western Middle Iranian *paritāv, from Iranian *pari-tāva- ‎(rampart), from *pari- ‎(around) and *tā̆v- ‎(to throw; to heap up). Compare պարիսպ ‎(parisp) for a similar formation. Compare also Persian پرتاب ‎(partâb), Tajik партов ‎(partov, garbage, waste), партофтан ‎(partoftan, to throw), the Armenian borrowing փարթավել ‎(pʿartʿavel, to throw), from *parā̆-tāva-.
