Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Perixanjan derives from North-Western Middle Iranian *paritāv, from Iranian *pari-tāva- (rampart), from *pari- (around) and *tā̆v- (to throw; to heap up). Compare պարիսպ (parisp) for a similar formation. Compare also Persian پرتاب (partâb), Tajik партов (partov, garbage, waste), партофтан (partoftan, to throw), the Armenian borrowing փարթավել (pʿartʿavel, to throw), from *parā̆-tāva-.
