According to Ačaṙyan, a reduplication of *քաղ- ‎(*kʿał-, to call), from Proto-Indo-European *kl̥h₁-, zero-grade of *kelh₁- ‎(to call). Among the cognates compare especially Sanskrit उषःकल ‎(uṣā-kal-a-, rooster, literally crying at daybreak), Ancient Greek καλέω ‎(kaléō, to call), Old Irish cailech ‎(rooster).
