Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Iranian *baxš. Compare Avestan [script needed] ‎(baxš, to distribute), Middle Persian [script needed] ‎(baxšidan, to give, to offer), Persian بخش ‎(baxš, portion, lot), بخشیدن ‎(baxšīdan, to give, grant, bestow), بخشیش ‎(baxšīš, present; an honorary or pecuniary gratuity; drink-money; baksheesh). These derive from Proto-Indo-European *bʰeh₂g- or *bʰag- ‎(to distribute).
