Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Indo-European *bʰel- (to blow, grow, swell) +‎ -ուն (-un). Cognate with Ancient Greek φαλλός (phallós), Old Norse boli (bull). The form բեղն (bełn) was back-formed from compounds such as բեղնաւոր (bełnawor). See also բեղմն (bełmn).
