From Middle Iranian *gōšak, from Old Iranian *gauša-ka- ‎(literally listener), from Proto-Iranian *gauš-, on which see گوش ‎(gôš). Akin to Middle Persian gwšk' ‎(gōšag, spy), Ossetian хъу́сӕг ‎(qúsæg) / и-гъосӕг ‎(i-ǧosæg, listener), Georgian loanword გუშაგი ‎(gušagi, guardsman) and Aramaic 𐡂𐡅𐡔𐡊𐡀 ‎(gwškʾ, a Persian official: spy), an Old Persian loanword.
