From Middle Iranian *tāg, possibly via Aramaic תגא ‎(tāgā), to account for թ ‎(tʿ) instead of expected տ ‎(t). Compare Persian تاج ‎(tâj), Parthian -tʾg ‎(tāg, crown) in xʾrtʾg ‎(xārtāg, crown of thorns).
