Etymology[edit]

The origin is uncertain. Martirosyan interprets as “the sign of the Sky/Thunder-god”, assimilated from *տիածան ‎(*tiacan), from Proto-Armenian *Tiw ‎(Sky-god, Thunder-god), compare տիւ ‎(tiw), -ա- ‎(-a-) + *ծան- ‎(*can-, sign, omen), of the same origin as ճանաչեմ ‎(čanačʿem).
