A borrowing from a Mediterranean/Pontic substrate, composed of *kalam- +‎ -ախ (-ax, tree-suffix). Compare South Azeri کلنبوُر (kələmbur), کلمپور (kələmpur, Tilia), Nakhijevan Azeri kələmbir (aspen), Common Azeri qələmə (poplar), Lak кӏялахӏи (ḳjalaḥi, aspen), Rutul [script needed] (kalax, aspen), Ancient Greek καλαμίνδαρ (kalamíndar, plane).
