From Proto-Indo-European *pel(H)-nu-mi, from the root *pleh₁-. Close cognates include Lithuanian pìlti ‎(to pour), Latvian pilēt ‎(to drip). Related to ողողեմ ‎(ołołem) and probably յեղց ‎(yełcʿ).
