Etymology[edit]

Uncertain. Ačaṙyan leaves the origin open.

J̌ahukyan connects the *ձու- (*ju-) part with ձուկն (jukn). He compares *-ղբ (*-łb) with Old Irish reduplicated lelap, lelab, lenab (infant, babe, child), reconstructing Proto-Indo-European *lebʰ- (youngling, nestling, child) for the Armenian and Celtic, deriving ձուղբ (jułb) from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰū-lebʰ- (literally fish-youngling). Martirosyan tentatively derives *-ղբ (*-łb) from աղբ (ałb, excrement, dung), for the semantics comparing ծիրտ (cirt, dung (of birds and flies)) : ծրտեմ (crtem, to spawn).
