From մած ‎(mac, glued together, curdled) +‎ -ուն ‎(-un). Typologically compare Persian ماست ‎(māst, coagulated milk, yoghurt) from ماسیدن ‎(māsīdan, to coagulate), Turkish yoğurt from yoğurmak ‎(to plasticize, knead).
