From մած (mac, glued together, curdled) +‎ -ուն (-un). Typologically compare Persian ماست(māst, coagulated milk, yoghurt) from ماسیدن(māsīdan, to coagulate), Turkish yoğurt from yoğurmak (to plasticize, knead).
