Etymology[edit]

From մեռ-(meṙ-), from Proto-Indo-European *mer-s-, sigmatic aorist of *mer-(to die), +‎ -ան-(-an-).

Verb[edit]

մեռանիմ ‎(meṙanim)  (aorist indicative մեռայ)

  1. to die, to expire, to breathe one's last, to give up the ghost, to depart this life, to pay the last debt to nature
    մահու մեռանել‎ ― mahu meṙanel ― to be punished with death, to suffer capital punishment
    մեռանել ի մարտ պատերազմի‎ ― meṙanel i mart paterazmi ― to die on the breach, to be slain in action
    մեռանել ի վերայ ազգին, ի սէր հայրենեաց‎ ― meṙanel i veray azgin, i sēr hayreneacʿ ― to die for one's country
    մեռանել քաջութեամբ, պատուով‎ ― meṙanel kʿaǰutʿeamb, patuov ― to die on the field of honor
    մերձ է ի մեռանել‎ ― merj ē i meṙanel ― he is at the last gasp, he is expiring, dying
    որպէս կեայ ոք այնպէս եւ մեռանի‎ ― orpēs keay okʿ aynpēs ew meṙani ― people generally die as they live
  2. to mortify one's body
