Etymology[edit]

From Middle Median *nižōg or Parthian *nižōg, from Proto-Iranian *nižauga- ‎(male horse, literally ejecting seminal fluid), from the prefix *niž- ‎(out, away) + the participle of *aug- / *auǰ- ‎(to be wet; to emit fluids; to sprinkle). See also վարուժան ‎(varužan).
