Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *porḱos ‎(fishing), with only surviving cognate being Ancient Greek πόρκος ‎(pórkos, fishing net). The sense of “fishing” must have become more general in Armenian. Dialectal հորս ‎(hors) form still preserves the initial *p-.
