From earlier *փայղծան (*pʿayłcan), from Proto-Indo-European [Term?]. Cognate with Ancient Greek σπλήν (splḗn) (whence English spleen), Latin liēn, Sanskrit प्लिहन् (plihan), Avestan 𐬯𐬞𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬰𐬀𐬥 (spərəzan), Lithuanian blužnìs, Old Church Slavonic слѣзена (slězena) (Russian селезёнка (selezjónka)).
