Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

A Classical Syriac borrowing. Compare Classical Syriac ܦܪܩ (p(ə)raq, to save), ܦܪܘܩܐ (pārōqā(ʾ), savior), ܦܘܪܩܢܐ (purqānā(ʾ), salvation). The word is of native Semitic origin. Compare Hebrew פָּרַק (pāraq, to save), Arabic فَرَّقَ (farraqa, to divide).
