Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Classical Syriac ܦܪܩ (p(ə)raq, to save). Compare Classical Syriac ܦܪܘܩܐ (pārōqā(ʾ), savior), ܦܘܪܩܢܐ (purqānā(ʾ), salvation). The word is of native Semitic origin. Compare Hebrew פָּרַק (pāraq, to save), Arabic فَرَّقَ (farraqa, to divide).
