Hebrew[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Directly from Jeremiah 31:28 (see quotation below).

Proverb[edit]

  1. Children will suffer for their parents' misdeeds.
    • Jeremiah 31:28, with translation of the Jewish Publication Society:
bayamím hahém lo-yom'rú 'ód 'avót 'akh'lú vóser v'shinéi vaním tikhéna.
bayyāmīm hāhēm lō-yōmərū ʿōḏ ʾāḇōṯ ʾāḵəlū ḇṓser wəšinnē ḇānīm tiqhénā.
In those days they shall say no more: ‘The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge.’

Usage notes[edit]

  • Often as a rhetorical question indicating that children should not suffer for their parents' misdeeds.
