Etymology[edit]

Calque of German Seehund.

In the Revival literature era there were authors appending the meaning "shark" to it, in analogy to Arabic كَلْب الْبَحْر (kalb al-baḥr) or French chien-de-mer, but the "seal" sense eventually prevailed.
