Etymology 1
[edit]Borrowed from Aramaic סְגוֹלָא / ܣܓܘܿܠܵܐ (sḡōlā, “cluster”), due to its graphic shape thought to resemble grapes. Accordingly, in the earliest Hebrew-language Masoretic treatises with shva on the samekh. Doublet of אֶשְׁכּוֹל (eshkól).
