Etymology[edit]

From Old High German antwurten (to answer), derived from the noun antwurti (whence ענטפֿער (entfer, answer)), itself from wort (whence וואָרט (vort, word)). Compare German Antwort, Dutch antwoord. English answer is a similar formation, but not directly related.
