[edit]From שָׁלוֹם (shalóm, “peace”) + עֲלֵיכֶם ('alekhém, “upon you”), literally “peace be upon you”. Compare Arabic اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ (as-salāmu ʕalaykum).
