From שָׁלוֹם (shalóm, peace) +‎ עֲלֵיכֶם ('alekhém, upon you), literally “peace be upon you”. Compare Arabic اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ (as-salāmu ʕalaykum).
