Etymology
[edit]From Middle Persian [script needed] (ʾhwl /āxwarr/, “manger; stable”). Compare Northern Kurdish axur, afirr, Central Kurdish ئاخوڕ (axurr), Northern Luri ںاهڕ (aherr), Pashto آخور (āxor, “manger, trough; stable, stall”) and Iranian borrowings: Old Armenian ախոռ (axoṙ), Georgian ახორი (axori), ახური (axuri), Classical Syriac ܐܟܘܪ (ʾāḵwar). The Iranian word literally means “a place for eating” and ultimately goes back to Proto-Iranian *hwar- (“to eat, consume”), on which see خوردن (xwardan).
