Etymology[edit]

From Middle Persian GMRA, ʾwštl ‎(uštar, camel), ultimately from Proto-Indo-Iranian *uštra-. Compare Avestan 𐬎𐬱𐬙𐬭𐬀 ‎(uštra, camel), Old Persian 𐎢𐏁𐎲𐎠𐎼𐎡 ‎(uša-bāri-, camel-borne), and Sanskrit उष्ट्र ‎(uṣṭra, camel, buffalo), Perhaps related to Old Armenian ուղտ ‎(ułt).
