[edit]Literally, “the Victorious”, named after an epithet of the planet Mars, النَّجْم القَاهِر (an-najm al-qāhir, “the victorious star”), in reference to Mars' passage above the site of the city at the time of the foundation of its walls in 969 CE; from قَهَرَ (qahara, “to defeat”).
