Etymology[edit]

Short for مَدِينَة الْقُدْس(madīnat al-quds), a calque of Classical Syriac [Term?], from Hebrew עיר הקודש‎. Morphologically from قُدْس(quds), from the root ق د س(q-d-s). Cognate to Old South Arabian 𐩤𐩵𐩪(qds) and to Hebrew קודש \ קֹדֶשׁ(kódesh).
