Etymology 1

[edit]

From earlier اَنْدَرْوَای (andarwāy), inherited from Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (ʾndlwʾd /andarwāy/, air, atmosphere), from Proto-Iranian *HantárHwaHyúš, (whence Parthian 𐫀𐫗𐫅𐫡𐫇𐫀𐫀𐫉 (ʾndrwʾʾz), 𐫀𐫗𐫅𐫡𐫇𐫀𐫉 (ʾndrwʾz /andarwāz/, atmosphere, sky) > Manichaean Middle Persian 𐫀𐫗𐫅𐫡𐫇𐫀𐫉 (ʾndrwʾz /andarwāz/, atmosphere, sky)), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hantár +‎ *HwaHyúš; see each one for more.

By surface analysis, اندر (andar, in) +‎ وای (wāy / vây, air).
