Etymology

Inherited from Middle Hindi تایا (taya /⁠tāyā⁠/) (c. 1435),[1] from Sanskrit *तातिय (*tātiya) / तात्य (tātyá).[2]

Cognate with Punjabi تایْا (tāyā) / ਤਾਇਆ (tāiā).
