Relative noun (nisba) composed of جُمْهُور ‎(jumhūr, crowd, public) +‎ ـِيَّة ‎(-iyya), coined as a translation of republic / res publica with the rise of Pan-Arabism during World War I. An Arab Jumhuriya was proclaimed in Italian-ruled Tripoli in 1919.
