Ultimately from Sogdian 𐼶𐼴𐽂𐼰𐼷𐼻𐼳‎(γwtʾynh /xwatēn, xutēn/, queen), perhaps via Manichaean Middle Persian 𐫑𐫀𐫎𐫇𐫗(xʾṯwn /xātūn, qātūn/, Lady, an Uighur female title) from Common Turkic *xātun.
