  1. to plunder on the road; to waylay and loot (e.g. a caravan)
    • c. 1390, Shams-ud-Dīn Muḥammad Ḥāfiẓ, “Ghazal 184”, in دیوان حافظ [The Divān of Ḥāfiẓ]‎[1]:

      چون ندیدند حقیقت ره افسانه زدند
      jang-i haftâd u du millat hama râ uzr binih
      čôn na-dîdand haqîqat rah-i afsâna zadand
      In the war of the seventy-two sects, pardon them all;
      Because they did not see the truth, they plundered [the caravan of] myth.

  2. to block a road
    • c. 1490, Nūr-ud-Dīn 'Abd-ur-Rahmān Jāmī, خردنامهٔ اسکندری [Alexander’s Book of Wisdom]:

      The way of happiness is blocked to my heart and soul.
