From Middle Persian [script needed] (SGYTWN-tn' /⁠raftan⁠/, to move, proceed), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁reh₁p-. Compare English reptile, Latin rēpō (I creep), Latvian rãpât, râpt, Middle High German reben (to move, steer), rebe (offshoot, bud).
