From Proto-Semitic, related to the root ص ف ح (ṣ-f-ḥ). Akin to Ge'ez ጻሕል (ṣaḥl, “bowl, jar, pan”), Hebrew צֵלָחָת (ṣelāḥāṯ, “pot”), Hebrew צַלַּחַת (ṣallaḥáṯ, “dish, bowl”), Aramaic צְלֹוחִיתָא / ܨܠ݀ܿܘܚܺܝܬܐ (ṣlōẖīṯā, “jar”).
