Etymology[edit]

The sense of yellow derives from the fading of more vibrant greenness in vegetation; unrelated to the false cognate Persian *زرپران(*zar-parân, saffron, literally with golden leaves) which is borrowed as زَعْفَرَان(zaʿfarān, saffron).
