Persian[edit]

Alternative forms[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (ʾpšwltn' /afšurdan/), from Proto-Iranian *fšar- (to press (and prepare and intoxicating drink)), of uncertain origin.[1] Perhaps from a semantic shift of a causative form of Proto-Iranian *fšar- (to feel shame) (whence شرم (šarm, shame)), with possible contamination from Proto-Iranian *sparH- (to tread, kick), the latter from Proto-Indo-European *sperH- (to kick).[2]
