From Proto-Pathan *las, from an ancestral Middle Iranian form *lás,[1] from Proto-Iranian *dáca, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *dáća, from Proto-Indo-European *déḱm̥.[2] Cognate with Persian ده (dah), Urdu دس (das).

Probably from dialectal or colloquial form of original *لست, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *lad- (slow, weary). Akin to Mazanderani لس (lass, slow).
