Borrowed from Classical Persian مَرْثِیَه (marsiya), from Arabic مَرْثِيَة (marṯiya).

مَرْثِیَہ (marsiyam (Hindi spelling मरसिया)

  1. (Islam, Shia Islam, poetry) a marsiya (an elegiac poem written to commemorate the martyrdom and valour of Hussain ibn Ali and his comrades of the Karbala' in the Battle of Karbala)
  2. (Islam, Shia Islam, by extension) a lamentation for one dead, an elegy, a dirge, an epideceum (especially the one sung during the Muharram in commemoration of Hasan and Husayn)
