Etymology

Inherited from Middle Hindi ٿکا (ṭka /⁠ṭakā⁠/) (c. 1639),[1] derived from Sanskrit टङ्क (ṭaṅka).[2]

Sense 1 is a semantic loan from Bengali টাকা (ṭaka). Cognate with Gujarati ટકો (ṭako).
