Etymology 2

[edit]

From the colloquial verb پیش کردن, or saying پیشته, used for scaring a cat away or getting it's attention or meaning to scare a cat or to get it's attention, ultimately imitative and unrelated to the meaning of پیش (compare Arabic بسة (bissa)). This etymology is perhaps related in the imitative regard to a common Germanic root for cat, compare English puss,Tamil பூசை (pucai), Romanian pisică, Tagalog pusa, Sardinian pisittu, Turkish pişik and Azerbaijani pişik.
