[edit]Inherited from Middle Hindi گاندھی (gandhy /gāndhī/) (c. 1654), from Apabhramsa गंधीय (gaṃdhīya), from Prakrit 𑀕𑀁𑀥𑀺𑀅 (gaṃdhia), from Sanskrit गान्धिक (gāndhika).[1] Sense 1.1 is a semantic loan from Gujarati ગાંધી (gāndhī).
