Arabic ۋ
Cyrillic У, у
Latin U, u

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • (letter name): IPA(key): /waw ˌyʃ noˈqat/
  • (phoneme): IPA(key): /uw/, /ʊw/ (back)
  • (phoneme): IPA(key): /ʉw/, /yw/ (front)
  • (phoneme): IPA(key): /w/ (consonantal)

Letter

[edit]

ۋ (w) (no case, Cyrillic equivalent У or у)

  1. The twenty-sixth letter of the Kazakh alphabet, written in the Arabic script; preceded by ۇ and followed by ۆ.

Usage notes

[edit]
  • Represents the back vowel dipthong /uw/ or /ʊw/, unless a small ء (hamza) was placed in the beginning of the word. In Kazakh the Hamza marks that all vowels in the following word are fronted.
  • The letter ۋ cannot act as a vowel in the beginning of a word or when it is written proceeding another vowel. When ۋ is unable to make a vowel sound, it becomes the consonant sound /w/.
