From the older form *ܥܦܪܕܥܐ (ʿəp̄ardəʿāʾ). Compare Arabic ضِفْدَع (ḍifdaʿ) and Hebrew צְפַרְדֵּעַ (ṣəp̄ardḗaʿ).
