Etymology

From Aramaic זְמַרַגדָּא (zmarraḡdā) with a prothetic alaph, from Ancient Greek σμάραγδος (smáragdos) therefore doublet of ܒܵܪܸܩܬܵܐ (bāriqtā); compare Hebrew אִזְמַרְגָּד (izmargád) and Arabic زُمُرُّد (zumurrud).
