From the earlier uncontracted form ܓܪܓܪܬܐ ‎(gargartāʾ), from the root ܓ-ܪ ‎(ɡ-r) related to dragging or leaking. Compare Arabic حَنْجَرَة ‎(ḥanǧara(t)) and Hebrew גַּרְגֶּרֶת ‎(gargéreṯ).
